ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

City Council members and community members in Kirkwood gathered at Coan Park on Saturday to show support for an Atlanta police officer who was shot.

Officer Christopher L. Smith was working an off-duty security job at the Edgewood Court Apartments on Hardee Street on Nov. 9 when he was shot in the leg and face.

Smith was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.  He was released the following day and continues to recover at his home.

The rally by community members was held in support of increased public safety awareness throughout Council District 5, which includes Cabbagetown, Reynoldstown, Lake Claire, Edgewood, East Atlanta, Kirkwood, East Lake and portions of the Old Fourth Ward.

"Rallying behind our law enforcement professionals, particularly in times of crisis, is an opportunity for neighbors to both give back and show their support for the community," said Atlanta City Councilmember Natalyn Archibong.
