Traffic stop leads to drug arrest

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Cochise County authorities arrested a man Friday after a traffic stop led to the discovery of drugs, drug paraphernalia and cash.

According to the Cochise County Sheriff's Office, Carl Schaffnit Jr., 43, was arrested and booked into the Cochise County Jail on multiple drug charges. He remains in custody on a $175,000 bond.

Schaffnit was arrested after a traffic stop in Sierra Vista. A Sheriff's Office K-9 Deputy alerted on the vehicle, prompting a search for illegal drugs or weapons, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Officers recovered approximately $3,000, 150 grams of Methamphetamine, 43 grams of heroin, a scale and items consistent with illegal narcotics sales.

Schaffnit faces charges of possession of a dangerous drug, possession of a dangerous drug for sale, transportation of a dangerous drug for sale, possession of a narcotic drug, possession of a narcotic drug for sale, transportation of a narcotic drug for sale, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and use of a wireless communication in the commission of a drug offense.

The K-9 deputy, Vinny, is an eight-year-old Belgian Malinois who has been with the Sheriff's Office for four and a half years.
