Sunday tornadoes second biggest outbreak in state history

Posted: Updated:

The National Weather Service says at least 26 tornadoes touched down Sunday in Indiana, making it the second-biggest tornado outbreak in state history.
Meteorologist John Kwiatkowski says Indiana's most active tornado day was June 2, 1990, when 33 tornadoes touched down.  Indiana's second-largest tornado outbreak day had been May 30, 2004, when 24 tornadoes cut across the state.
But the weather service said Tuesday that its survey teams' preliminary findings show that 26 tornadoes struck the state on Sunday.
That makes Sunday the second-biggest tornado outbreak on record in Indiana. That pushes the June 1990 outbreak to third with 24 tornadoes, followed by April 3, 1974, outbreak, which spawned 20 Indiana tornadoes.
