PAULDING COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Paulding County Chairman David Austin wrote an open letter to Delta CEO Richard Anderson last week, accusing him of trying to impede the county's efforts to offer commercial airline service. Late Wednesday afternoon, Austin got a response, confirming what he already believed.

"I feel like this is David vs. Goliath," said Austin. "Anything they can possibly find to throw an obstacle is what they'll do."

In his letter, Austin suggested Delta was using high-priced attorneys to find procedural or environmental reasons to hold up the FAA's approval of the Paulding County airport plan.

Austin forwarded an email from a Delta spokesperson, confirming the airline's opposition.

"Delta has long opposed a secondary airport in Atlanta, including in Paulding County," wrote spokesperson Holden Shannon. Shannon indicated this opposition was due in large part to how secondary airports in major cities have a tendency to "siphon traffic flow from hubs at the primary airports and ultimately reduce the number of flights and destinations that can be successfully operated."

Austin said any airport in Paulding County would do little or nothing to interfere with the prosperity of Delta and Hartsfield-Jackson airport.

"It's about our Paulding citizens being able to get on a flight for $59 here in Paulding and fly maybe to Disney World," said Austin.

"We'd start out with two flights a week, and possibly move to two to four flights a day, when they do 1,000 a week.  I think it's just incredible that they would try and stop a community from bringing jobs to the area."
