GA 400 toll ends Friday after two decades

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

The GA 400 toll ended Friday after two decades in operation. The last toll was collected at 11:30 a.m.

The toll plaza was completed in 1993 and is used by almost 120,000 people a day.

The tolls generate in the neighborhood of $50,000 a day. That's roughly $20 million a year, at a cost of 50 cents per vehicle.

The tolls have been used in the last two decades to pay down bond debt, operate and maintain the road, and fund the State Road and Tollway Authority.

Demolition of the toll plaza will start at the beginning of the year and is expected to cost the state almost $4 million.
