Atlanta homeless man does good deed for tourist

Posted: Updated:

CBS Atlanta was with a hotel manager when he found a homeless man who was responsible for returning a woman's wallet Friday.

Joel Hartman, who was digging in a trash can for food, found a woman's wallet with her ID and credit cards. The woman is from Paris. She was in Atlanta for a convention.

About six hours after the incident, Hartman walked into the Omni Hotel and asked if there was a guest there who lost a wallet.

The Omni's general manager, Scott Stuckey, said the man told his staff that he had checked several hotels in the area before he came to the Omni. It turns out, the woman was staying there.

Stuckey said the Omni wanted to return that man's kindness.

The Omni decided to have Hartman stay at the hotel as a special guest for a few days.

He said the generous response to what he did surprised and touched him.

"I'm still in a little bit of shock", he said. "The last 24 hours at the Omni have been stupendously, outrageously wonderful."

Hartman said he feels especially thankful this holiday season.

People in the community who heard about his good deed have also dropped by to give him money.

The 36-year old lost his girlfriend last year in an accident, devastating him.

"Up until recently I've been pretty depressed lately, you know. Holidays are not good for me," said Hartman.

Hartman gets to stay at the hotel until the day after Thanksgiving.
