Thanksgiving holiday bittersweet for local soldiers

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A group of soldiers came through Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport after finishing up basic training at Fort Benning.

Soldiers Richard Mather and Ricardo Rincon will go their separate ways.

Some, like Mather, will get to go home for the holiday.

"I can't wait to get some turkey and stuffing tomorrow," Mather said. "I'm thankful to be going home, to be able to see my friends and family, I'm also thankful to be done with basic training."

Mather completed the grueling training with Rincon, who will be spending the Thanksgiving holiday starting further training.

"I know I'm serving my country even though I'm not doing much - I'm going to school but I'll be able to help people," Rincon said.

Rincon said this Thanksgiving he's thankful for the fellow soldiers who helped him make it through basic training.

"Without them I don't really think I would have been able to finish this whole thing," Rincon said. "They're my support, we've all been through things together. We all made it as a unit, as a team."
