NEW YORK (AP) -

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s family and one of his former top aides, Andrew Young, have been united for decades by a common goal -- protecting the legacy of the slain civil rights leader.

But now a lawsuit threatens that bond over a bitter point of legal contention: Who has rights to King's words and images?

The conflict centers on a lawsuit filed by King's sons, who control their father's estate. The lawsuit includes a request that Young be removed from the board of directors of a nonprofit devoted to his memory over allegations he used footage of King in a documentary without permission.

Young disagrees about his use of footage in which he and King both appear. He says he also has a right to King's legacy.
