Local stores make pitch for "Small Business Saturday"

With all the frenzy on Black Friday, many merchants are banking that you'll skip big stores, to buy local.

The day after Black Friday is "Small Business Saturday." This is the local business answer to Black Friday.The idea started four years ago.

There are a plethora of small businesses in the Richmond Metro Area. Kimberly Overman sells and restores vases, sculptures and dolls decades or even centuries old. "Small Business Saturday" helps Kimberly to build trust and meet new people who venture into her store on Patterson Avenue.

"That's been one of the nicest things about this particular business," Overman said. "The people we've met over the years, and you kind of grow along with them.

It's being pitched as a day to discover the unique, skip the lines and the fights, and keep money within the neighborhood.

But if you're schedule is stacked on "Small Business Saturday", there are still ways to help out.

You can always go online to ShopSmall.com to shop for small businesses, and when you do that, the post office will give you free shipping on your order.

Michael Duke sells Victorian fireplaces at his store on North Boulevard, in Richmond.

There he says customers and his top-notch clients expect service they can't get a big box store.

He also says that on this day for small businesses, it's easier for customers to return products, or, get help.

"It's kind of difficult when you're buying something off the Internet from Texas or California or out of the country, and you have an issue with it, and it becomes a shipping game where you're sending it back and forth," Duke said.
