80-year-old Richmond man escapes house fire

Posted: Updated:

In Richmond, an 80-year-old man is counting his blessings tonight after his bedroom went up in flames.  It happened at his home on East 35th Street just off of Midlothian Turnpike.

Investigators say the home is a complete loss.

The homeowners' nephew lives down the street and says he was on his way to pick his uncle up for a trip when he saw fire trucks in front of the house.

James Nash has lived in this home on East 35th Street for 36 years.  You may not be able to tell by the exterior, but the home is completely damaged after a fire in a back bedroom.  Nash says a heater may be to blame.

"I walked in the back bedroom and saw the fire," he said.  "I hear the beeper, the beeper kept beeping."

He may not be as fast as he once was, but Nash says he wasn't afraid of the flames and smoke.

"I walked out! I walked out! I'm good and healthy! I'm spry!" he said.

He walked across the street to Bessie Williams, who was babysitting her great grandchildren.

"It was kind of upsetting because that was my neighbor," she said.  "It can happen to anyone, anytime."

It took 30 minutes for firefighters to get everything under control.  Fire investigators have not yet determined a cause, but do believe this was an electrical fire.  They say it could have been from the heater or from an overused extension cord.

While Nash may have lost his home, he says he's putting things into perspective.  There are other things that are much worse.

"I'm not going to worry, let that upset me," he said.  "I lost two brothers in less than a year."

Investigators tell NBC12 the house is a total loss, the damage is estimated to be $80,000.  Nash refused help from the Red Cross and says he's going to stay with another brother.
