ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Atlanta police have served warrants to a driver accused of using his car to jump a curb to kill a pedestrian.

The incident happened Sunday around 5:30 p.m. near Gartrell Street SE and Boulevard Street SE.

The warrants came after the accused driver, Alex Mason, 63, was given a chemical breath test. A preliminary investigation showed Mason and the victim were arguing prior to her death.

Witnesses told officers they believe Mason revved up his car engine and intentionally struck the victim while she was on the sidewalk. Friends and family of the victim identified her as Marilyn Redding.

Police indicated they did not find any evidence Mason tried to stop.

"He started mashing the gas, backing the car back and forth, like he was trying to really make sure she was dead," said Arthur Jones, who said he witnessed the crash.

Police charged Mason with aggravated assault and murder. He waived his court appearance Tuesday.
