Braselton bank's drive-up ATM stolen with forklift

It's not something you see very often. A bank's drive-up ATM was stolen, and the theft was caught on surveillance cameras.

"It's rare because they are so big and you need construction equipment to pick these things up," said Braselton Capt. Michael Steffman.

It happened on Thanksgiving at about 3 a.m. at the Hamilton State Bank in Braselton.

Steffman said the crooks are professionals. They stole a boom fork lift from a construction site at the corner of Highway 211 and Highway 124. Then they drove it to the bank.

"Very frustrating. Officers are riding around at 3 a.m. and nobody saw anything and we have this huge piece of construction equipment driving down the road and people are oblivious to it," said Steffman.

A truck used in the theft has very distinctive paint chips on the hood. It's a late 90s to early 2000 Chevy pickup. Police are counting on the public to help them solve this case.

"We're hoping they recognize the truck, maybe they recognize the mode of operation, as far as hitting the ATMs," said Steffman. "I know we had some recent ATM thefts in Atlanta. We also had one prior to this a few years back which was a similar thing, to try to pick it up with construction equipment but they knocked it over and couldn't get it back up."
