GAINESVILLE, GA (CBS46) -

A Hall County deputy opened fire on a man Sunday morning after the man refused to put down a sword, according to the Hall County Sherriff's office.

Authorities say deputies responded to the 2000 block of Sailors Avenue in Gainesville after receiving an assault call.

Police say they found a 27-year old man who had already injured three victims with what appeared to be a "large edged weapon thought to be a sword or machete."

When the man did not comply with the deputy's orders to lay his weapon down, authorities say they tried to contain the man using non-lethal force.

A deputy had to eventually open fire after the man made an aggressive move.

The man suffered a non-life-threatening injury, was transported to a local hospital and eventually released into the Hall County Sherriff's custody.

The man has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault on peace officers and one count of felony obstruction.

The deputy is on paid administrative leave while the case is under investigation.
