Christian youth center set for demolition, but members have plans for next step

Posted: Updated:

With less than a month to go before bulldozers move in to begin demolishing their building, members of the 7 Venue have faith they will find another building to continue their Christian ministry.

The state Department of Transportation is preparing to widen Highway 92 through Douglasville, and the 7 Venue stands in the way of the project. Demolition is just a matter of time, but how much the venue is compensated by the state remains in question.

"They didn't take us seriously before; they just considered us just another business," said member Chris Redmond.

Founder Tony Hart said they were initially offered around $200,000 to move out of their corner of the soon-to-be-demolished shopping mall. That number is less than one tenth of what they would need to relocate somewhere else, he said.

During the second negotiation, Hart said things went much better. He is hopeful they will be able to negotiate at least $1 million to relocate.

"We are a ministry to give these kids hope. These kids are fighting for their home," said Hart. "Either we trust what God's got planned for us, or we start whining and crying."

The 7 Venue was founded in 2005 and hosts mainstream rock concerts, along with Christian worship services on two stages. Redmond estimates they've helped minister to thousands of young adults during their eight-year existence.
