Man found burned in house fire dies

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A local man has died as a result of an overnight house fire in southwest Atlanta, according to the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department.

Firefighters found a male homeowner in a rear bedroom unconscious, AFRD confirmed. He suffered from burns and smoke inhalation. Crews administered CPR to the man and he was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. He later died, according to AFRD.

Neighbors told CBS Atlanta that the victim was a retired man who lived by himself. The victim's identity was not released pending notification of his next of kin.

The fire was contained to the bathroom, according to the fire department. Firefighters also found a dog in the kitchen. It was unharmed in the fire and turned over to animal control.

The fire department was called to the scene around 12:10 a.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
