Accreditation officials visit DeKalb County

STONE MOUNTAIN, GA (AP) -

DeKalb County schools officials say they're awaiting results of a progress report after representatives from an accrediting agency made a two-day visit to the district.

District spokesman Quinn Hudson said Tuesday that five officials from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools interviewed board members, the superintendent, office staff, parents and business leaders about improvements the district was asked to make to keep its accreditation.

The district was put on probation last December after a six-month investigation. The investigation cited in a report long-term leadership issues including nepotism, fiscal mismanagement, inappropriate micromanagement and intimidation within the district.

Hudson says SACS is expected to file an updated report on the district's accreditation status by the end of January.

DeKalb County is the state's third-largest school district, serving about 99,000 students.
