A woman who got into what appeared to be a taxi cab reported that the driver kidnapped her, robbed her at gunpoint and sexually assaulted her, according to Marietta police.
The crime happened on Lake Drive near Claymore Drive on Dec. 5.
At approximately 4:30 p.m., a man driving an older model white Ford Crown Victoria with an unknown taxi company logo, written in Spanish in red lettering, offered a woman a ride.
Officers said they are concerned about the man's boldness. The rape took place on the side of a busy cut-through street in daylight.
"The fact that it was a busy street and that he was armed during this encounter and he didn't care who saw per se, really shows a lot of great concern for us," said Officer David Baldwin of the Marietta Police Department.
The man pulled out a handgun and sexually assaulted the woman in the backseat. The rapist allowed the woman to leave the vehicle after the assault. He left traveling toward the South Marietta Parkway, the victim told police.
Detectives are not sure if the driver was a real cabbie. They also said the car may not have a taxi decal on it anymore.
Officers are warning people to watch out for a driver offering rides, as cab drivers usually don't approach walkers unless they've been flagged down.
The driver is described as a 6'2" tall, approximately 40 to 45 years old and possibly Hispanic. He has a scar over his right eye, a tattoo of a teardrop below his left eye and a large tattoo of a bird or eagle with red eyes on one of his forearms.
Anyone with information about the identity or whereabouts of the driver is asked to contact Detective Arrowood at 770-794-5371 or the Marietta police anonymous tip line at 770-794-6990.
