ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Zoo Atlanta has proven that determining the sex of a panda isn't always black and white.

Four-month-old twin giant panda cubs Mei Lun and Mei Huan, under closer examination, are females. Both were thought to be male.

Zoo Atlanta also discovered Po, 3, once thought be to male, is actually a female.

"All three giant pandas were originally sexed as male by colleagues from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, but it is not unusual for young giant pandas to be sexed incorrectly. Prior to the time they are at least 3 years old, there are no obvious external cues as to their sex," said Keisha Hines, Director of Public Relations and Communications for Zoo Atlanta.

There are no plans to change the names of any of the pandas.

Giant pandas Xi Lan, 5, and Po are expected to be moved to China's Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
