Puppy alerts sleeping family to fire in Gwinnett County

Posted: Updated:

A puppy alerted a sleeping family of an early morning fire in Gwinnett County on Sunday.

The family of seven was asleep in their Peachtree Corners home when persistent barking from the 5-month-old puppy woke the father.

According to authorities, the father then heard a noise coming from his garage, which is where he was met with smoke and heat.

Authorities say firefighters arrived to find flames in the garage of the two-story house.  The flames also extended to an attic above the garage.

The fire caused damage to the garage, attic and outer portion of a vehicle in the garage.  There was also smoke throughout the house.

The house did have a smoke alarm, but authorities say the alarm did not sound because there was initially no smoke inside the living area of the home.

"The occupants are safe, because of an alert family pet.  It is not uncommon to hear about household pets who alert people to danger," said Gwinnett County fire captain Tommy Rutledge.

The family, which included two adults, five children, two cats and the puppy, escaped unharmed.

The cause of the fire is unknown, although authorities say it appeared to be an accident.
