Waycross firefighter killed on job

Posted: Updated:
WAYCROSS, GA (AP) -

A firefighter has died fighting a blaze in a vacant home in Waycross.

Spokesman for Georgia's Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner, Glen Allen, says firefighters responded to the fire shortly after midnight on Sunday.

Allen says the home had been vacant for a long time and didn't have electricity or utilities hooked up. The fire was ruled an arson.

Allen says that during the blaze, 50-year-old Waycross Fire Department Lt. Jeff Little became trapped and died. Little had been with the department for 12 years.

Under Georgia law, Little's death will be investigated as a homicide.

Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens says arson is a serious crime but that Little's death makes the case especially horrendous. Hudgens is offering a reward for information.
