FedEx expects hectic holiday shipping season

Posted: Updated:

The FedEx shipping center in Marietta is expected to see one of its busiest days Monday when the center processes some 25,000 packages.

Shipments are expected to almost double its daily average volume.

"Today is going to be very busy. It's probably going to be our busiest day yet," said FedEx senior manager Chuck Ogles. "Later this week it's really going to get busy."

Overall, the shipping giant expects to ship some 21 million packages during the holiday season.

Packages sent up until Dec. 23 are guaranteed to arrive by Christmas, but FedEx employees recommend that shippers not wait until the last minute to send gifts.

"Just get it shipped as early as possible and make sure you package your packages correctly with the right tape and a sturdy box," Ogles said.

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, FedEx forecasts more than 260 million shipments will move through its worldwide shipping networks.

To handle the surge, FedEx has added 20,000 seasonal positions at FedEx Ground, FedEx Home Delivery and FedEx SmartPost and is offering additional shifts to current team members working at facilities around the country.
