Dozens of Clayton County cats, kittens need good home

CLAYTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

There are dozens of cats at the Clayton County Animal Shelter in need of a home.

Mary Ellen Neborski's rescue group works with the Clayton County shelter, but the director said too few volunteers help out. Money and space are tight, and there is no vet to care for the cats – many of whom arrive sick.

On Tuesdays, cats and kittens must be routinely put down.

"Coming in here it's really, really heartbreaking and I'm probably going to cry the whole way home because I'm going to be leaving without a kitty today because I'm full. My foster care is full and I can't take anybody today," said Neborski.

The shelter's director, Capt. Mark Thompson, has made a lot of progress, saving thousands of animals from being killed in the past five years. But he said more needs to be done.

"Simply what that means is there's going to be more animals put to sleep than any of us want to see," said Thompson.

But unless the shelter can get more money and more help, Tuesdays are still the toughest day of the week for everyone.
