Thieves on the prowl for holiday shoppers

Posted: Updated:

It's that time of year when thieves are out in full force targeting shoppers and their vehicles.

"My windshield shouldn't be smashed open. Because I do hear stories about that all the time," said shopper Sacha Davis.

Atlanta police agree with Davis but add in some cases thieves use tools to jimmy open car doors to get what they want.

That's what happened at Phipps Plaza in the middle of the lunch hour on Friday.

Kim Green told police her driver-side door was pried open.

Police told CBS Atlanta News that process is less messy, it makes less noise and the victim may not even realize they've been broken into until they get home.

"The crooks likely targeted my car because it was slightly out of the way of security cameras," said Green.

Detectives told CBS Atlanta News they are still investigating that crime.

Meanwhile, Davis said her co-worker had his car broken into just a few days ago while he was parked in a shopping center parking lot.

"They stole his bag that was in the backseat. So now ... I took my sneakers off, I put it in the trunk," said Davis.

Police echo Davis' safety tip, detectives said they can't stress enough how important it is for shoppers to keep valuables locked in the truck of their vehicles.
