DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

An off-duty Atlanta police officer was struck by a car as he stopped to help a stranded motorist Monday night.

The incident happened on Interstate 285 near the Moreland Avenue exit just before midnight.

The officer, who police have not named, parked his personnel vehicle on the side of the road to people involved in an accident until DeKalb County officers arrived on the scene.

While standing on the side of the road, another vehicle not involved in the original accident hit a vehicle that was unable to be removed from the road.

After hitting the disabled vehicle, that vehicle swerved towards the officer and struck him while he was standing outside assisting occupants of the original accident.

The officer was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with only minor injuries to the leg and is expected to fully recover.
