Local reaction to Loehmann's filing bankruptcy

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Discount retailer Loehmann's filed bankruptcy protection this week.

It's the third time the company has done so over the years and now it plans to liquidate.

The parking lot in front of the Briarcliff Road store was fairly empty when CBS Atlanta crews stopped by to talk to shoppers just before noon on Wednesday.

One shopper told CBS Atlanta News she saw the closing coming.

"It's never really that busy here during the day so I wasn't that surprised," said Rachel Hoath.

A spokesperson for the retailer said a lack of dollars coming in and steep competition are why they filed Chapter 11.

Competition is something the manager at the Half-Moon Outfitters in Virginia Highlands said is not a problem for them.

"It's not really a concern for us. We have a good brand," said Anand Suthar.

Suthar said keeping new and must-have items stocked has meant big business for them.

"We have some holiday sales going on and going into the New Year. Going into Christmas we had a good holiday warm-up sale a couple of weeks ago where we highlighted some of our items," said Suthar.

The retailer sales outdoor clothing and gear but specializes in good old fashioned customer service which includes a free coffee bar for customers.

"We do different holiday tables where we highlight good gift ideas. When some people walk in and they don't know what they're really looking for, we try to help them something that they want," said Suthar.

Shoppers hoping for deep discounts as Loehmann's merchandise is sold off at auction likely won't see them right away since the goal typically is to make as much money as possible.
