Bankhead Diner served up free Christmas Eve meals

Posted: Updated:

Tuesday afternoon the breakfast grill at Bankhead Diner quickly transitions from pancakes, eggs and bacon to a traditional holiday feast.

It was a Christmas Eve meal with all the fixings and it was free.

"Me and my son decided to do it," said owner Jennifer Guy.

Jennifer Guy and her son Joey Guy decided four years ago, that a free hot meal was something the folks of Douglas County needed to help spread holiday cheer.

It's the best part of Christmas. There's nothing better than to see the people's faces that come in," said Joey Guy.

The free feast started as a way to give to those in need but it also includes regular customers, as way to say thank you for the loyalty.

"We have such a good business here. If it wasn't for the people of Douglas County, we wouldn't have our business here," said Joey Guy.

The giving didn't stop with the hot meal, they top things off with donated clothes and shoes.

Volunteers sorted the donations and hand them out to anyone who needed them.

"It's heartbreaking. It makes me feel good that I can do this with the help of all the neighbors in the county.

The diner served about 150 people and delivered a few more meals out into the community to those who couldn't make it in.
