ROME, GA (CBS46) -

It was a Christmas Eve to remember for the Wheeler family. With smiles on their faces, Bobby and Carolyn Wheeler hugged and thanked the officer who made this holiday season one to remember.

On Dec. 11 Floyd County Police officer Chad Matthews was named Officer of the Year for his department. Matthews responded to the Wheeler's home on Sept 4. For a call for service. As Bobby Wheeler was explaining what happened, he passed out.

"Mr. Wheeler looked up at a me, he had a stressed look on his face, for lack of a better term, he told me I feel like I am going to pass out, and in that very instant he goes into cardiac arrest," Matthews said.

Immediately, Matthews said he sprinted to his patrol car and grabbed his AED, or automated external defibrillator.

"I delivered one shock, I gave two sets of chest compressions and two rescue breaths and on the second breath that is when I got him back, I got a physical response he started coughing and moving," Matthews said.

On Christmas Eve, Matthews visited the Wheeler's at their Floyd County home. Bobby Wheeler was surrounded by his grandson, great granddaughter, wife and only daughter. All could not be more grateful for Matthews' quick thinking that saved Bobby's life.

"Especially, at Christmas time," Carolyn Wheeler said. "It seems more precious, life seems precious and it was more precious to us now than it has ever been."

Wheeler, 77, said he never smoked or drank and had no signs of heart troubles leading up to his heart attack. He said Matthews was a gift sent from God to save him.

"The only thing I know, the Lord has something he wants," Bobby Wheeler said. "He left me here for some reason. What could I say for him (Matthews), I couldn't say enough, he was here right on time."

Matthews said it felt great getting awarded Officer of the Year but it didn't top saving Wheeler's life.

"The best feeling, is knowing I helped a man live and he is alive and well today because I was there with the AED," Matthews said.
