USO welcomes fewer troops on Christmas Day

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

The USO at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport saw fewer troops passing through this Christmas Day than past years.

At last check around 6 p.m., about 40 soldiers had stopped by the USO suite for free food and a place to rest.

Neil Hytowitz has volunteered to greet troops at the airport for the last eight years, he told CBS Atlanta News that low number is bittersweet.

"It means we don't have a lot of people to serve but yet we want to be here to serve them. But I guess it means our country is seeing less conflict and that's good," said Hytowitz.

The troops who did stop by the suite were also greeted by Santa and Mrs. Clause.

The USO said about 15,000 troops passed through the airport over the past week leading up to Christmas.

A spokesperson told CBS Atlanta News no matter if they have one soldier or 1,000, they'll be there to serve them.
