Heart-transplant recipient home for Christmas after surgery

Posted: Updated:

If you asked Marcus Guillory's doctor a year ago: would he be here to celebrate Christmas today? He would've told you the odds are slim.

"He said in 23 years or surgery, no one has ever survived," Guillory.

A few weeks before Christmas last year, doctors performed a quadruple bypass on Guillory's heart.

They did not "see how I could make it with all the major arteries clogged," Guillory said.

Doctors told Guillory's wife, Miriam, her husband could soon die.

"It was scary.  You didn't know what was going to happen," Miram Guillory said.

Later, the same day as the bypass surgery, doctors delivered the Guillorys miraculous news.

"There was a donor who matches 99 percent," Marcus Guillory said.

An 18-year-old man, accidentally shot to death, was an organ donor.

"It was a surreal moment," Guillory said.

What looked like a death sentence became a second chance at life.

"This is a gift," Guillory said.

Guillory got to celebrate Christmas with his wife, three children and the rest of their family.

"I was confident the lord still had some things for me to do," he said.

In death, a complete stranger saved Guillory's life.

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart. My family thanks you, we are forever grateful," Guillory said.

Guillory hopes to meet his donor's family one day so he can thank them in person.
