What's the deal with the giant M&M on the Peach Drop tower?

Posted: Updated:

As Underground Atlanta prepares for the 25th Annual Peach Drop, people are wondering what's up with the giant peanut M&M that's fastened to the tower. Will it take the place of the famous peach?

Not a chance, organizers say.

Just like in year's past, the peach will make its descent from the tower as the clock strikes midnight. But with M&Ms being the sponsor of this year's event, there will be some sort of surprise for spectators as the peach passes the M&M on its way down.

People who are planning to be in the crowd are wondering if the M&M will open up and shower M&Ms over the crowd, confetti - or perhaps something even better.

"I am going to take off the jacket and scoop it all up. I love peanut M&Ms," said Crystal McPherson who is planning to attend. "That is what I want to happen, to explode M&Ms or money. I will take it. No problem."

Organizers won't say exactly what the surprise will be. But they're excited to be partnering with M&Ms.

"They are launching a marketing campaign, 'Year of the Peanut,' said Michelle Lawrence, a spokeswoman for Underground Atlanta. "They chose the Peach Drop based on its success and longevity to launch their campaign on New Year's Eve. They also buy their peanuts from a lot of Georgia farmers, so they are passionate about their peanuts."
