Police search for gunman robbing Family Dollar stores

Posted: Updated:

Cobb County police said they are working with other police agencies to find a gunman who has held up nearly a half dozen Family Dollar stores in metro Atlanta.

His latest target was the store on Six Flags Drive in Austell.

"I guess they're easy targets," said George Hutchinson, who is a regular customer at the Austell store. "There's usually women in there, not no guys and they don't have no security. Then they've got the safe sitting in the middle of the floor."

According to police, the suspect poses as a customer who plans to check out.

"He probably surveils the immediate area to make sure that there's nobody else around, and that's when he displays the hand gun," Sgt. Dana Pierce told CBS Atlanta News.

Pierce said that investigators across metro Atlanta are now sharing information to track down the armed robber.

"A lot of people come here," said customer Brittany Thompson. "Kids, children, elderly people, so it's very important that they find this person."

Pierce said that clerks at the various stores have handed over money from the cash register and no one has been hurt.

"These employees are doing the right thing, giving up this cash to this suspect in particular," said Pierce. "Right now, he's not gone forward and injured anybody. We don't want that to happen."

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
