Officer involved wreck kills one

MARIETTA, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

No charges are expected in a fatal wreck that involved a Marietta police officer.

It happened around 5:45 p.m. on Powder Springs Road near Bellemeade Road Tuesday. A preliminary investigation showed that a 1995 Oldsmobile Cierra was traveling northbound on Powder Springs Road when the driver failed to yield to oncoming traffic.

The driver turned left into the path of an unmarked 2013 Marietta Police department Ford Explorer vehicle driven by Major Cliff Kelker. The Ford struck the front right quarter-panel of the Oldsmobile.

Both the driver and passenger of the Oldsmobile were taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. The driver, 88-year-old Evelyn Lyle, died at the hospital. Her passenger, 66-year-old Michael Lyle, is listed in critical condition according to Marietta police.

Major Kelker was not injured in the wreck.

No charges are pending at this time. The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Stephen Miller at 770.794.5356.
