CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Chesterfield police have arrested a former volunteer firefighter for stealing a fire truck, taking it on a joy ride and crashing it last July.

Kevin W. T. Burns, 27, is charged with grand larceny in connection with the theft. Police say he stole the fire truck from a county maintenance lot in the 9700 block of Lori Lane on July 20, 2013 as it was waiting a final check before being put into service by the airport.

Burns apparently hopped a fence, and got in the unlocked truck,  then drove off with it, crashing through the fence and taking the truck on a near 14-mile joy ride through Chesterfield, according to police.

It was later found in a ditch near the intersection of Bundle and Woodpecker roads. The truck was badly damaged and officials said at the time it would take weeks or months to get it back into service.

The truck is the only specialized foam truck in the county. Officials say other trucks do carry some foam, but this one was headed to service at the airport where there are larger fuel spills.

Burns began working with Chesterfield Fire as a volunteer at Station 10 in December 2011, but was later terminated for an unrelated personnel issue, according to fire officials.

Burns was finally arrested on Dec. 22. Police are still investigating the theft. Anyone with information should contact Crime Solvers at 804-748-0660.
