Third Tucson streetcar rolling into town

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

2014 is going to be a big year for the Tucson Streetcar, according to Tucson city officials. A third streetcar is expected to arrive to Tucson early Tuesday morning, making the project closer to reality.

Despite years of planning and construction, some businesses along the streetcar route have mixed feelings about the project.

Small business owner, Robert Hall, just opened his store Generation Cool last month on 4th Avenue. He said, "I'm not really concerned about anything. I saw the test cars going back and they were pretty quiet and pretty non-invasive."

However, Alexis Corral who has owned Lollipop Culture Shop on 4th Avenue for about the years said, "We're being optimistic about it. Hopefully it does bring in lots of business but we're just going to have to see what happens."

Tucson city officials said a number of things are happening over the next few months to finish the streetcar project, including the arrival of a third car early Tuesday morning. The remaining cars for a total of eight are expected to arrive over the next several months. They will then each be tested along the tracks.

The cost of the street car project is about $200 million.

City officials say the streetcar could start operating sometime in Summer 2014.
