Busted pipes plague homeowners in Marietta neighborhood

Posted: Updated:

By 5:30 p.m., eight homes off Wickingham Drive in Marietta had broken pipes Tuesday.

Lauren Baus' homes was one of them. Her daughter and friends found the leak.

"We were going outside to play ping pong in the garage and we heard a noise," said Katie Baus. "We turned on the light and there was water all over the floor."

"The water was halfway through the middle of the garage, and when we went out front, it was running out from underneath the garage door," said Lauren Baus.

Lauren Baus said she and her family have lived in their Marietta home for six years.

"I really thought I had done the right things," said Lauren Baus.

Days before temperatures dropped below freezing, Lauren Baus covered her water faucets outside.

"And I had the water inside the house dripping constantly. I though I did everything I was supposed to do," said Lauren Baus.

Keith McCowen with Superior Plumbing said unfortunately Lauren Baus didn't do everything to protect her pipes, and  now it's going to cost her.

"The line was not turned off and it was not drained and then an insulated cover was installed on top of it," said McCowern. "The problem that occurred is the pipes expanded, cracked and she has some water inside."

McCowen said before you cover your outside faucets, turn off the water to the outside lines.

You may have more than one valve to turn off and they may be located near your water heater or underneath a cabinet.

"In Baus' case, one is under the bathroom cabinet," said McCowen.

Four of Lauren Baus' neighbors arrived home Tuesday evening and discovered water leaking out of their garages.

McCowen said Superior received more than 300 calls about frozen or broken pipes Tuesday.

Four of those calls were in Lauren Baus' neighborhood.
