Pipe burst causes icy road before morning commute

Posted: Updated:

A burst water pipe forced the closure of Metropolitan at Wells Street in southwest Atlanta during the early part of the morning commute on Wednesday.

Atlanta police blocked the section of roadway after a pipe rupture caused water from the leak to freeze on Metropolitan.

The pipe cracked, according to Atlanta police, just after 12:50 a.m. One lane was re-opened shortly before 8 a.m. The second lane is expected to re-open shortly after.

Difficulty contacting the business owner to gain access to the pipe prolonged the clean-up process and resulted in even more icing. Police eventually blocked the intersection, fearing the ice-covered asphalt would cause major traffic accidents during the morning commute.
