Local apartment complex accused of discrimination

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Some apartment complexes in metro Atlanta may soon be hearing from investigators with the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Thursday the National Fair Housing Alliance filed several complaints accusing employees at the apartment complexes of discriminating against people who are deaf or hard of hearing. NFHA said it conducted a six month investigation involving apartment complexes in 117 cities and 25 states.

"I am shocked that so many of the 30 companies we targeted engaged in discrimination," said Shanna Smith with NFHA.

Smith said 935M, an apartment complex in Atlanta is one of the properties that was targeted in the investigation.

"The apartment manager would provide different information about how much the rent was for the deaf caller as opposed to the hearing caller and they called very close in time so that both of them should have been given the same information about apartment availability and rental rates," Smith said.

Smith said employees at Berkshire at Lenox also discriminated against deaf callers and that is unacceptable.

"If I can afford it, I should be able to move in if I qualify. I should be able to move in and when you hang up on a deaf person and you lie about the rent availability, you have blocked their opportunity to choose the neighborhood and the place where they want to live. That is a violation of the Fair Housing Act," Smith said.

A spokesperson for Alliance Residential, LLC, the company that owns 935M said the company is looking into the allegations and is working on a response. CBS Atlanta was unable to get in contact with anyone connected to Berkshire at Lenox.
