GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A man was killed in a fire in Gwinnett County early Friday morning.

Firefighters responded to a report of a house fire on Lake Drive in Snellville around 1:53 a.m.

Crews could see heavy flames from a distance as they responded to the scene.

There were three adult occupants inside the home when the fire broke out, a man and woman on the main-level and a male relative who was staying in the basement.

Firefighters were made aware of a possible man trapped inside, however, due to the magnitude of the fire and collapse conditions, crews were unable to enter the home.

The man in the basement, later identified as Frederick Fleming, 47, was last seen going back down the stairs before the fire department arrived.

After the fire was put out, firefighters were in the process of digging out debris from the remains of the burned home when they discovered Fleming's body.

Fleming died of smoke and soot inhalation according to the Gwinnett County Medical Examiners Office.

The names of the two injured occupants have not been released.

The exact cause of the fire is undetermined and is under investigation by the fire department.
