Young mom's killer still free one year later

POWDER SPRINGS, GA (CBS46) -

It has been one year since someone murdered a young mother in her Powder Springs home with her then-eight-month-old baby nearby. Now police and Danielle Marshall's mother are reminding people the killer is still free.

Powder Springs Police Chief Charlie Sewell says the leads have dried up and detectives need the public's help finding the killer.

"I'm a parent as well, and I think it's horrible when a small child is left without a mother. We don't want to tolerate this type of crime in Powder Springs, and we'll do everything we can to bring this to a successful conclusion," explained Sewell.

On Jan. 14, 2013, the father of Danielle Mashall's baby called police to say he could hear his child crying inside the Palomino Drive home where Marshall and her baby lived with Marshall's mother, but no one was coming to the front door. When police arrived, they found the home's back door open, and Marshall was dead on the kitchen floor. Her baby girl was crawling around.

Near tears, Marshall's mother, Gloria Marshall, says this year has been a real battle. She never expected to outlive her daughter, who was just 23 years old and had recently gone back to school for nursing.

"It's truly difficult, especially when I look at my grandbaby, and I see her smiling and she has her mother's dimples, and just how unfair this truly is. It just, this isn't right. It's so wrong in so many ways," said Gloria Marshall.

Marshall is now raising her 20-month-old grandaughter. She said she believes police will find the killer.

"We just have to find this person," she said. We just have to. OK? Because I know this person cannot be walking around living and knowing what they did. And I just hope every day when they go to sleep it plays over and over in their head."

This is the only homicide in Powder Springs in 2013. Police believe the killer targeted Danielle Marshall. They urge anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 404-577-TIPS.
