Bongo escapes habitat at Zoo Atlanta

Posted: Updated:

An eastern bongo briefly left his habitat at Zoo Atlanta Wednesday, according to the zoo.

The adult male left his habitat Wednesday afternoon and caused the zoo to temporarily close, as zoo guests were taken to the nearest buildings as a safety precaution.

No one was injured during the incident.

According to the zoo, the bongo was calm and did not behave aggressively. The veterinary team safely tranquilized and returned him to his holding area.

Eastern bongos are a critically endangered antelope species in east Africa.
