Volunteers serve meals to homeless on MLK Day

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Hundreds of volunteers served as many as 10,000 hungry and homeless Atlantans on this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless hosted the 44th annual Martin Luther King Holiday Dinner from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the Georgia International Convention Center.

For each of the last 44 years, the lines have grown longer. Every time a free meal is offered by HFTH, there's never a shortage of people in need.

And daunting as it seems, Afemo Omilami said this is what he lives for.

"I look at it as a challenge for me to just give more and more of myself every time its asked of me," said Omilami.

He's been in charge of HFTH since 2000. He's dealt with recessions, donation shortages, and seemingly impossible budget problems.

But they always find a way to put food in the mouths of those who need it.

"Those civil rights leaders who gave their lives for us to be here today, I think they'd be pleased we're carrying on the legacy Dr. King gave his life for," said Omilami.
