Wind chills dropped into the single digits in Atlanta Wednesday morning.

While winds have relaxed since Tuesday, wind chill values are still expected to remain below 20 degrees for much of the day.

Take extra precautions when outdoors.

Below 40 through Saturday

A fast-moving weather system moved across the southeast Tuesday producing snow in the north Georgia mountains, and a few flurries in metro Atlanta.

Behind that system, very cold air will stay in Atlanta through the rest of the week.  With teens for lows each morning, afternoon highs will stay in the 30s Thursday and Friday.

Atlanta is not expected to reach 40 degrees until Saturday afternoon.

Slick roads in the mountains

Georgia DOT urges motorists to stay off the roadways in the Northeast Georgia Mountains. Hazardous conditions are developing in White and Union Counties. A crew is spreading salt and gravel on SR 11/US 129 on Blood Mountain at Neel's Gap. Another crew is spreading salt and gravel in Union County on SR 348.

"Georgia DOT is monitoring the roadway conditions as snow is falling in Dawson, Lumpkin, Rabun, Towns, Union and White Counties. Currently the wind is keeping the roads dry in most places. Two crews are working right now, pone in Union and one in White spreading salt and gravel at the higher elevations on SR 11 and SR 348. These roads are wet and snow could stick to the roadway. Please use extra caution and limit your travel in the Mountain Counties tonight," said Georgia DOT District Engineer, Bayne Smith.

SR 180 spur in Union County is now closed and will not reopen until temperatures reach above freezing at Brasstown Bald. This State Route has a gate and a lock on it, preventing motorists from getting stuck at its higher elevations.
