Freezing temps punish morning commuters

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Wednesday morning as MARTA commuters made their way to work, they were met with the wicked wrath of old Jack Frost.

The return of the dreaded Polar Vortex dropped temps to lows that felt like 4 degrees in Metro Atlanta.

MARTA riders told CBS Atlanta staying warm is all about wearing layers.

"Put on a lot of clothes. Don't come out with no skimpy stuff on 'cause you gonna freeze," said MARTA rider Ishea Allen.

With morning temps in the teens, it's not just about dressing warmly. You must also think about protecting your pipes and pets.

Two weeks ago, Kimberly Heinrich and nine of her Marietta neighbors found out the hard way after she forgot to leave the water running to keep her plumbing from freezing.

To make matters worse, two days passed before plumbers could come to her home to fix the rupture.

"They couldn't come out for a few days, so at first I just wanted to get my water turned on," Heinrich said. "So I was just willing to pay what needed to be paid."

The cold snap is expected to last for at least the next three days.
