Special brew to raise money for restaurant workers in crisis

ATLANTA, GA (CBS46) -

Atlanta-based SweetWater Brewery has produced a special beer that's being sold to raise money to help members of the local hospitality community who are going through hard times.

The craft beer was created to help raise funds for The Giving Kitchen, a charity that helps hospitality workers who have experienced catastrophic emergencies.

SweetWater is calling its brew 'Second Helping IPA.' The brewery is encouraging second helpings of the beer, which hit cooler shelves and draft taps in metro Atlanta on Jan. 14.

The Giving Kitchen was inspired by the outpouring of support generated when Atlanta chef Ryan Hidinger was diagnosed with late stage cancer in December 2012. Hidinger passed away Jan. 9.

Industry workers and others knew Ryan through his restaurant work history, including Bacchanalia, Floataway Café, Muss & Turner's and the Staplehouse supper club.

Before he died, Hidinger collaborated with SweetWater's head brewer Nick Nock to create the special Second Helping brew.

"Ryan is such a talented and inspiring spirit," said Nock. "It was an honor to collaborate with one of the best culinary minds in the business to cook up a recipe that not only pleases the palate, but also represents hope."

Second Helping is a limited-release beer sold in 22-oz. bottles and on draft at participating bars and restaurants around metro Atlanta in support of the campaign. All profits from the beer's sale will be donated by United Distributors and SweetWater Brewery directly back to The Giving Kitchen.

The Giving Kitchen is planning to repurpose Staplehouse, which originally functioned as a supper club, into a restaurant to create sustainable funding for the charity. It is set to open this summer or early fall in Atlanta's Old Fourth Ward neighborhood. All proceeds from the restaurant will benefit The Giving Kitchen.
