Congressman running for Senate giving away rifle

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Georgia Congressman Paul Broun is kicking up his Senate election campaign by giving away a free rifle, but not just any rifle. Broun is holding a drawing for an AR-15.

Broun issued a statement saying that the drawing is intended to affirm his support for the individual right to bear arms.

Broun is a candidate in the race for the Senate seat of Saxby Chambliss who is not seeking re-election.

The AR-15 is the same type of semi-automatic weapon used in the mass shootings in Aurora, CO and Newtown, CT.

Broun wrote on his website that, "President Barack Obama would like nothing more than to ban the AR-15 and that's exactly why I've decided to give away a free AR-15 to one of my fellow 2nd Amendment supporters."

The drawing is on Feb. 28.
