Gwinnett County police said they filed murder charges against a Gainesville man after he admitted he intentionally caused a deadly head-on crash last week.

The driver, 21-year-old Jason Nicholson, was released from the hospital Thursday night and is now in jail.

Police said he told investigators he purposely crossed into the oncoming lanes and crashed into a half dozen cars at the intersection of Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Singleton Road in Norcross.

One woman died in the accident. Nicholson was critically injured.

"It was not accidental, we do know that," said Cpl. Jake Smith. "But as far as what was going through his mind or why he actually drove his car into oncoming traffic, we're not 100 percent sure yet."

Police said they do not believe Nicholson knew anyone in the line of cars waiting at the intersection.

"We don't know at this point if he was trying to harm himself or harm others, but we don't think he had targeted someone specific in those vehicles," said Smith.

Investigators are still waiting for tests to see if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.

Nicholson is facing a felony murder charge and 10 counts of aggravated assault.
