Public works crews brace for winter blast in metro Atlanta

Posted: Updated:

Public works and utilities crews across metro Atlanta are preparing for heavy snow in parts of the area, hoping to avoid a repeat of the 2011 ice storm debacle that left the city at a standstill.

"We've made a lot of changes and improvements," said Richard Mendoza, director of the city of Atlanta's Public Works.

"We do have about twice as much resources as we had then," added Burke Brennan, spokesman for DeKalb County.

In the city of Atlanta, Mendoza says they've acquired 40 snow plows and 30 sand trucks, up from eight and four, respectively, in January 2011. In DeKalb, Brennan said they now employ eight salt/sand and snow plow trucks.

"We've got all of our trucks, making sure they're gassed up and ready to go," said Brennan.

Mendoza said they plan to pretreat some roads around the city before severe weather moves in late Tuesday.
