Road conditions force school administrators to cancel classes

Posted: Updated:
CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Prince George County and the City of Hopewell were among the first localities to cancel classes Wednesday night because most of their secondary roads still aren't passable.

While VDOT classified most primary roads and interstates in metro-Richmond as "passable," secondary and neighborhood roads still needed work.

We caught Hopewell resident Donna Benton coming home from work. "I turned off of the nice and clear main road and onto this," said Benton pointing to snow and ice.

Prince George residents said the same thing. "The main roads are pretty clear but the back roads are still icy and slick," said Kevin Cobb.

One reason why VDOT says some secondary roads haven't been plowed is because folks park their cars on either side of the street making it extremely narrow and impossible for VDOT trucks to salt or sand.

VDOT crews continue to work 12-hour shifts and have shifted their focus from primary roads to secondary. VDOT hopes to have most secondary road cleared before the morning commute, Thursday.

VDOT officials and Virginia State Police are urging drivers to watch for black ice. Patches of water on roads less traveled will freeze. Bridges, overpasses and exit ramps are also areas of concern.

State police ask drivers to take it slow and leave enough distance between yourself and the car in front of you. Also, if you start to skid - don't slam on your brakes. Instead, take your foot off the gas and slowly apply the brake.

In case of emergency, call 911 or #77 but to check road conditions call 511.
