Residents help clear roads

Posted: Updated:

Cobb County took in 900 calls on Thursday alone from people wanting crews to treat specific roads in their neighborhoods.

Residents along Buckner Road took matters into their own hands.

Mike Bentley said on Thursday morning, he and several people shoveled parts of Buckner Road in Mableton. It has steep hills and sits mostly in the shade of trees.

"The frustration is homeowners are having to do what they have to do to clear side streets, not Public Works," said Bentley.

Robert Quigley, Cobb County spokesperson, said the county has nine spreader trucks and 50 people working non-stop on clearing the roads. There are 2,400 miles of road in the county.

Bentley said most of the ice on the roads near him was gone by late morning and he credits the weather for that.

Quigley said crews are charged with focusing first on major roads, then secondary roads and then neighborhood streets. He also said Mother Nature was a great help in getting rid of the ice. He said the county is grateful for what people have done on their own.
