DNA identifies suspect in 1986 rape cases

Posted: Updated:

Thanks to DNA evidence, Marietta police detectives have solved two rape cases dating back to 1986.

DNA collected at the scene of the crimes has now been linked to Antonio Brooks.

Brooks, 44, is currently serving time at Lee State Prison for another rape in Marietta in 1988.

Detectives were contacted in September of 2013 by a victim of rape which occurred in September of 1986. Detectives reviewed old case files and found two open cases during that time frame where DNA evidence was collected.

A review of the two open rape cases revealed that not only did the DNA match that of Brooks, but the methodology used in the 1988 rape conviction matched that of the two open cases as well.

He's charged with rape, aggravated assault and burglary in one case, and rape and burglary in the second.

All three incidents were committed within a quarter mile of each other.

Detectives are currently reviewing case files from that time frame to see if there are any additional open cases. Anyone with information to these cases or any other related cases are asked to contact Detective Shannon Arrowood at 770-794-5371 or the Marietta Police Anonymous Tip Line at 770-794-6990.
